B Symphonic Cycle

The attraction of the subscription concert cycle of the Slovak Philharmonic is the presentation of large symphonic works. These works form a special part of the program and are all the more remarkable as not all of them are performed regularly.
Charles Gounod is known mainly through his operas. He wrote only two symphonies, influenced by the classical masters and at present they are performed only sporadically. His first symphony to be performed by the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by the French conductor Emmanuel Villaume. When we think of Berlioz we immediately imagine the Symphonie Fantastique, or his overtures Benvenuto Cellini, the Roman Carnival, Le Corsaire and Beatrice and Benedict. The Grande Symphonie Funèbre and Triomphal by Hector Berlioz, written originally for large military orchestra, string orchestra ad lib. and choir is intended for public celebrations. The majestic Symphony no. 4 by Johannes Brahms, filled with pathos and melancholy, forms part of the traditional repertoire of the orchestra. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky`s Manfred Symphony, after Byron, rarely appears, proven by the fact that it was last performed by the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra nine years ago.
Concert works and symphonies by composers from the 19th and 20th centuries are enriched by the large vocal-instrumental works of Jules Massenet and Manuel de Falla. Only six years after the first performance of his opera, Massenet composed his life work, the beautiful and sincere drama with a Biblical theme, Mary Magdalene. This remarkable and grandiose work will be heard at the Slovak Philharmonic for the first time. The cycle is largely made up of works by French composers, their authentic performance strengthened by the presence of the renowned French conductors Emmanuel Villaume and Serge Baudo. To celebrate the approaching 100 year anniversary of the birth of the previous Chief Conductor of the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, Prof. Ľudovít Rajter (1906), his composition Allegro sinfonico, will be performed by the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by its present Chief Conductor and simultaneously Rajter`s former student, Vladimír Válek. A new addition to the program is a concert by the Symphony Orchestra of the Slovak Radio.
