Revolutionary changes in the construction of the concert piano led to a vigorous intensification of musical composition. Gabriel Fauré's Nocturnes draw inspiration from the model set by Fréderic Chopin, navigating towards new ideals with their sonic inventiveness, akin to those presented by Claude Debussy. Robert Schumann is considered the ""godfather"" of modern piano artistry, with more than twenty of his initial compositions dedicated to the piano. Éric Le Sage, a French pianist and winner of the International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau (1989), embodies ""the ideal French piano aesthetics and clarity,"" according to Die Zeit. As a soloist, he performed in Carnegie Hall and the Konzerthaus in Vienna. He performed under the baton of personalities such as Sir Simon Rattle and Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
